| What is Chiropractic? |
Chiropractic is a health care profession that
focuses on disorders of the musculoskeletal system
and the nervous system, and the effects of these
disorders on general health. This means problems
involving:
1. nerves
2. muscle, and
3. bone
Doctors of Chiropractic practice a drug-free, hands-on
approach to health care that includes patient examination,
diagnosis and treatment. Chiropractors have broad
diagnostic skills and are also trained to recommend
therapeutic and rehabilitative exercises, as well
as to provide nutritional, dietary and lifestyle
counseling.
Doctors of chiropractic undergo a rigorous education
in the healing sciences, similar to that of medical
doctors. In some areas, such as anatomy, physiology,
rehabilitation, nutrition and public health, they
receive more intensive education than their MD counterparts.
The typical chiropractor has completed at least
9 academic years of study.
Because of the hands-on nature of chiropractic,
and the intricate adjusting techniques, a significant
portion of time is spent in clinical training.
In total, the chiropractic curriculum includes
a minimum of 4,200 hours of classroom, laboratory
and clinical experience. The course of study is
approved by an accrediting agency that is fully
recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. |

| What is a Chiropractic adjustment? |
An adjustment is the precise manipulation of a
joint to restore it to full function and relieve
pain.
Joint problems can have several different causes,
including trauma, overuse, lack of muscular support,
normal wear and tear, or excessive scar tissue.
Your doctor may use several types of adjustments
to correct your problem. Most of these procedures
are ‘hands-on’, and involve a brief,
gentle thrust that may result in a ‘popping’ sound
from the joint. This sound, though not necessary
for an effective adjustment, is caused by a slight
release of gasses that have built up in the joint.
You might compare this to the pressure released when
you uncork a champagne bottle.
Patients often report feeling pain relief, relaxation
and improved movement almost immediately after an
adjustment. And, adjustments are helpful in preventing
or reducing the wear and tear our bodies experience
daily. Professional athletes have long relied on
Chiropractic care to help them recover from injuries
and to improve their performance. |

| What is Physiotherapy and Rehab? |
As part of your evaluation, your doctor will
be looking for what caused your condition in the
first place. He will check for range of motion
problems, flexibility issues, muscle imbalances
and neurologic deficits.
Physiotherapy is the use of certain treatments
for management of pain, inflammation and swelling.
These “rescue” therapies include electrotherapies,
ultrasound, heat or ice therapies and joint traction.
Their goal is to get you comfortable quickly so
your recovery can begin.
Rehabilitation is a group of therapies designed
to rebuild the parts of you that have been damaged
or neglected. Rehab is described as ‘active
care’, and will involve specific exercises
and movements for improving your balance, coordination
and range of motion in your everyday life or sport.
Core training, or the development of the deep abdominal
muscles, is often part of this treatment. The core
muscle group enables your body to move more efficiently,
which speeds healing, increases endurance and boosts
performance.
It is our goal that all of our patients continue
a simple rehabilitative program at home, long after
we’ve helped them through their injury. There’s
no mystery – when you take care of your body,
it will take care of you! |

|
| What if I don't get better? |
If you're not responding to treatment in a reasonable
length of time, we will immediately refer you to
an appropriate specialist.
Even though our patients enjoy a terrific rate of
recovery, we understand that certain conditions fall
outside our scope of practice. Remember: your full
recovery is our goal. We'll do whatever it takes
to achieve that. |

|
| Will I have to go to a chiropractor forever? |
No, you will not get 'addicted' to Chiropractic!
It is helpful, though, to think of Chiropractic as
maintenance for your spine. Just as brushing your
teeth helps prevent serious dental problems, Chiropractic
check-ups help maintain a pain-free, healthy spine. |

|
| I've heard about Spinal Decompression Therapy -
what is it? |
| Spinal Decompression Therapy is a remarkable new
technology for treatment of sciatica and herniated
discs. It works by gently relieving pressure on the
spine, which eases pain and speeds up the healing
process. The treatment is completely comfortable,
and can be effective in even the most severe cases.
We're pleased to be able to offer Spinal Decompression
Therapy in our office. Your doctor may recommend
it as part of your treatment plan if he feels you
are a candidate. |
